Cut & Paste Dreams With Directions

I'll be honest, prior to creating my first Dream Board I thought they were a bit juvenile. There I sat at the dining room table a year ago with a group of friends feeling absolutely silly cutting up magazines, calendars and gluing the pieces onto poster board until I realized what was happening. I was setting goals. Me set goals? I know I was surprised too. Creating goals to me then was like taking an exam with only two minutes left on the teacher's clock when the pencil lead snaps under the pressure – and my future depends on my answers.

I began the creative project by sectioning off areas for home/family, vacation, my business, and personal growth/spirituality. Breaking it up into groups allowed a visual for what parts of my life were unbalanced. In my business box had pictures of money in it. Looking at it (a year later), I realized I didn't specify how I was going to earn or receive the cash. It was undefined. Adding a “list of action” would have been wise; laying down a foundation from which to grow. The list could have been used as a road map. I willy-nilly chose to select beef on the menu and hoped the waitress brought back a thick slice of medium-rare prime rib smothered in sauted onions with garlic mashed potatoes on the side next to the streamed green beans topped with butter, salt and pepper.

“A goal is to have a destination in mind. Desires plotted out like a road map to reference when you feel lost.”
-Cindy Kochis

To create your own, start with poster board or a blank piece of paper (any size, type, color). Ah, the blank slate ~ visual silence. Allow the innocents of the child within to explore the pages of magazines, newspapers and other printed material. Daydream about the things you would like to bring into your life; no matter how out of reach you currently think it is. Cut and paste things you wish for onto the Dream Board. Don't stop there, write a general list next to it of how you plan to accomplish the goal. Overtime, as you look at it, you will find yourself figuring out ways to define your aim on the target. Narrowing the focus on these desires get the mojo movin' faster and attracting those experiences, items, people into your life.

What is on your Dream Board?

  1. A dream board sounds very therapeutic, it is setting goals for yourself without thinking about them as "goals". (which scares some people) I myself would have a rather simple dream board, marriage, house, job, children and plenty of love all around!

  2. I started a new Dream Board early Sunday morning and found myself picking out house-type pictures from the magazines and placing them on the paper. What I discovered was that although I've dreamt of having a log cabin in my woods, what I really want is a two-story home with items I hadn't considered.
